Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from a small town in Palm Beach County and come from a variety of different economic backgrounds where 91% of students are on free and reduced-price lunch. Some students come into class without knowing any English! This has been the story for many of my students this past school year. Although I have students from various backgrounds, my school did receive new students who were displaced because of Hurricane Maria this school year. These students have moved to Florida because of devastation and destruction to their home and school in Puerto Rico. This effect has given these children a new home, school, friends, language, and culture. I have been enjoying supporting my newest students. After giving them time to feel welcome to our school and community, I have found areas where I can help them grow and develop within their overall academics including reading, writing and learning to speak English. I love to watch all the growth and accomplishments of every child, every day. Year after year, my heart only grows bigger for all of my students with each year of teaching. Every child has a special place in my heart.

My Project

Every year I have students who are new to the country and need some resources to help them learn English. This year, many of them have been displaced because of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The Stages Learning Materials Language Builder Sequencing Flash Cards Photo Action and Self-Help Skills Sequence Cards will provide an opportunity for me to work with my students in a small group where they feel comfortable beginning to learn the language. The cards provide activities for the students to engage in learning to read, write, listen, and speak. The storage bins will be a great place to keep the cards and books we are requesting. La Princesa and the Pea, Ada Twist, Scientist, Vocabulary Cartoon of the Day, Wonder, Last Stop on Market Street,- these are some of the book titles that will promote diversity and allow students to see characters in a non-traditional form where princesses are speaking Spanish, girls are scientists and engineers and diverse characters and cultures are represented to allow students to make connections with various characters. These allow students the opportunities to speak and share thoughts and opinions for each various charcters from the books. The Fountas and Pinnell prompting guides one and two, reading and writing strategies books and intervention books will give students explicit areas they can zone in on and see strategies to help them learn. The Phonics, Word Study Guide, Learn a Language DVD and Vocabulary Builder allows students to see how the English language works and applications for its use.
