Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Let's get kids excited about science through STEM and engineering!
My school is a Title 1, low-income school where the majority of students receive free or reduced price lunches.
The population is largely Dominican and nearly all of the students live in the Washington Heights neighborhood of upper Manhattan. About 25% of the student population receives special education services and has an individualized education plan (IEP).
These students are inspired by even seemingly small things, and when they feel supported they accomplish truly amazing feats. Just a little bit will go a long way. Thank you for helping us make our classroom one conducive to lifelong learning and academic attainment!
My Project
Instead of doing the standard science exit project, this year we want to spice things up a bit and get the students excited about learning again! After attending the National Science Teachers Association conference in Boston, I was inspired to inspire. I want to plan an end of year project that will relate to the students and get them interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, & mathematics)!
The project will focus on sustainability. Students will conduct research on sources of renewable energy, participate in class debates about the efficiency of each, incorporate math in deciding cost efficacy, and write an argument-based essay to support their findings. At the culmination of the unit, students will build REAL solar, wind, and water powered models using the K'nex kits.
This project would support so many real-world skills: problem solving, debate, forming a conclusion and supporting it with evidence, engineering design, etc.
I hope this unit will inspire students to continue to try and find environmentally friendly options in their everyday lives.
