My students atypical preschool learners who are either on the Autism Spectrum or have severe speech, language and cognitive delays. They are 3-4 year olds who have Individualized Education Plans to meet their unique academic, social and emotional needs. At times, it can be very challenging to motivate atypical learners to take the initiative in their learning from home. However, the right resources can make a world of difference and although they are young, they have made tremendous gains during their time in school.
Because our school has shut down it's physical location due to the unfortunate COVID-19 pandemic, my students are struggling to continue gaining their education and meet their learning goals within their own homes.
They have been provided with tablets and/or laptops recently and have been trying their best to participate in my Google Classroom. Online learning has been quite a journey for all of us so far and technology has played a crucial role in helping to motivate my students to achieve at such a high level.
My Project
When I first learned that schools were going to be physically closed for the remainder of the school year, I was shocked. I was worried for my students who not only thrive on predictable routines and a lot of support, but desperately need it in order to learn and succeed. I quickly created my Google Classroom and sent my students' parents a variety of online resources they could use to help their children continue working towards their individualized goals. This time can be very challenging for students with special needs and their parents who may have other children and remote jobs to balance all at once. My biggest fear is that without the continuity in their education, my students will regress and lose a substantial amount of knowledge and skills they have mastered since the beginning of the school year.
Now that our classroom has gone fully online, I wish to be readily available for my students and their families and provide them with as many resources as possible which an iPad and pencil will make possible.
With these tools I will be able to deliver the instruction from my home to theirs as if we were all in the same room. I will use the many apps offered on the iPad to differentiate the instruction to meet my students needs. It will also help tremendously while video conferencing with students and creating videos to share with them. I will use the apple pencil to draw on a virtual white board to show my students the examples that will help them understand the material. The pencil will also help me edit their work to give actionable and individualized feedback to each student.
