Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach STEAM electives to middle schoolers in an under-resourced and underfunded school which also boasts a free and/or reduced-price lunch participation of 100%.

My students are amazingly diverse, hard-working, and enthusiastic about learning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

These kids have many obstacles that they face in their daily lives, but once they enter my class, they are spirited, driven, and ready to wow me with their curiosity and ingenuity. They constantly impress me with their creativity and talents!

Right now, school is closed but we are learning remotely. We have a Google Classroom where the students access their curriculum and we also do live video sessions as needed. However, it's hard to teach my curriculum remotely when the students and I don't have access to the technology and equipment at school.

My Project

With the pandemic happening, there has been a lot of news about the lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our frontline workers. Makers all over the world have taken to their 3D printers to design, share, and print out their solutions to this program, pumping out 3D printed masks and donating them to hospitals and organizations that need them. This is a real world problem where people with 3D design skills are applying real solutions.

This project will solve the problem of allowing the students a chance to print their designs remotely as they will be tasked with creating or improving upon a design to help out with PPE supplies.

I would like to continue teaching 3D Design & Modeling with my students. Thankfully my district has given all the students laptops and provided them with free internet access. The students will have access to the 3D cloud design program. However, it's sort of a tough sell to teach 3D design when the students can't physically print items out.

If this project gets funded, I will have the 3D printer and filament at home and they can send me their files to print. The 3D printer has a camera function and cloud printing software so I can stream the print to my students and they can watch their design being printed live. How engaging would that be? After their design is done, I will arrange drop off to the students' homes. If the students want to donate their prints to help out people who need masks, we can arrange that as well so this learning experience doubles as a community service project.
