Reminiscing with Gatsby-California Style: Hearst Castle and the 1920's
My students need to take a trip to Hearst Castle to be able to see ornately appointed guest accommodations, art, and home extravagance of the 1920's in alignment with their reading of Gatsby!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These students are from a rural community and love to explore the world outside of their home community through literature. Most of my students come from bilingual or Spanish-speaking households and have not been read to at home before. They are resilient individuals for being able to not only read and write well in English, but also for being able to speak multiple languages fluently. The students take an interest in reading and book clubs because they understand the life opportunities that are increasingly available to avid readers, and they see reading as an opportunity to understand communities and cultures outside of their own realm.
The American literature course the students are engaged in provides them with a safe, fun, and academically stimulating atmosphere where they can discover the beauty of literature and engage in diplomatic discussion afterwards about what they have read.
Openness to the ideas and opinions of other peers is always encouraged, and the students improve their life and oration skills by learning to provide textual evidence and research to support their arguments. The students also frequently practice effectively putting their thoughts into writing and even using writing as a means of furthering thought.
My Project
In an American literature unit focused on the 1920's and Gatsby, students will conduct research about 1920's topics and will engage with literature describing the time period in order to achieve their final goals of having a formal debate of literary analysis topics, taken from the Gatsby text, and creating a living history day on campus where other students can come hear from the 1920's research essays that the students have written and become immersed in the time period themselves.
Travelling to Hearst Castle would provide the perfect opportunity for American literature students to be able to see ornately appointed guest accommodations, a private Gothic suite, and a diverse collection of art and antique objects, all reminiscent of the '20s of those described in the novel they will be reading, The Great Gatsby, by Fitzgerald.
This experience will allow students practical insight into what the time period was like and will enable them to better recreate a 1920's day on campus afterward, as well as complete the writing of their 1920's period research papers.
