Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How much do you REALLY remember about the sixth grade? Sure, you might remember the first time you had a boyfriend or girlfriend break your heart... and sure you might remember that one teacher who you swear was a demon. But what else can you remember? Probably not much...
I teach in a public school in Colorado.
My building is a Title I school, and very low income. The majority of my sixth grade students come from disadvantaged, single parent homes. Unfortunately, many of my students don't even live with their own parents, but rather with grandparents or foster homes. Eager to learn, but often without the resources at home, many of my students spend hours at school, outside of regular school hours in the labs or with dedicated teachers willing to come in early, or stay late. With hormones racing and bodies changing, these soon to be young adults are struggling with the challenge of growing up, becoming more independent and learning who they are... all while trying to figure out what class to go to and how to open up that dang locker!
My Project
The crafting materials that my students and I are requesting would allow my students to catalog their sixth grade year into an archival portfolio that they would be proud to share with their own children. Every time I conference with parent, they comment on what their sixth grade year was like, but often reflect on how foggy their memories are, and usually they only remember what kind of trouble they got into and which teacher caught them. I would like my students to record the positive aspects of the sixth grade, include great things they did, in my class and out, and have something to look back at when they are older. Many of the materials I have been able to obtain, mostly by purchasing myself. The pens and Cricut machine would transform their projects from blah to BLAM!
This project will help create an archival quality memory for my students to look back on in the years to come and hopefully they will not only remember they fun things we did in class, but fondly recall the sixth grade as a time of turmoil, drama, and growing up.
