I am a Fourth and Fifth grade teacher at Pueblo Vista Elementary School located in the San Francisco area. In our school, 73% of our students recieve free lunch and 63% are learning english as a second language. I cannot even begin to express how important it is for these students to practice their reading and writing skills. Do you remember SRA? It's the color-coded reading laboratory that students love. They get to work at their own pace, chart their own progress, and successfully move up through all the interesting levels of stories. The program contains instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. These are all areas in which our English-language learners need extra practice. Our students are working at many different reading levels and SRA stories address our students' needs from beginning readers to advanced. As students' fluency improves, the next, more advanced story is ready for them. We are currently using a Reading Laboratory that was published in 1978! The story cards are falling apart (not to mention a little outdated), and many of the cards are missing. We would love to have a new set to take us into the future. The hours of student use will be very high for the SRA Reading Laboratory because each of our 4th and 5th grade classes will use them every week, and for many years to come. Thank you for considering our proposal to help students become better readers.
