Help me give my students some flexible seating options, and copies of the books they're most interested, to read in their different seating arrangements!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My goal is that my scholars work to become leaders in their community, and getting to and through college despite the risks.
The scholars of Third Ward, Houston, Texas are considered "at-risk," however, the mission at our school combats this notion:
"We exists to eliminate educational inequity by partnering with the Southside community. We develop Giants who are ready to excel in and graduate from a 4-year college. We empower Giants to demonstrate resilience and integrity, advocate for self and their community, and strive for excellence."
My Project
At the beginning of this year, I added a new component to my classroom: a reading corner. The reading corner currently consists of 3 small woven rugs, and 8 seat cushions. I wanted students to have a space to read and do partner and independent practice, that was different than the traditional table + chair. I never expected the outcome! Children generally have 30 seconds to move wherever they'd like with their partners, and that half of a minute has become a race to get to cushions and a rug. I'd like my students to have several more options for "freedom" in their seating such as CanDo donut ball cushions, Gaiam "Stay-and-play" inflatable seats, and even latex bands for children who would like to stay in traditional chairs, but want something to fidget around with with their feet.
Flexible seating options will make work more enjoyable, and feel like less of a taxing task.
Your donation would be greatly appreciated by all of us, as we can focus less on comfort, and more on literature analysis.
