My Students
My student population is comprised of about two-thirds minorities in a major metropolitan area. Many students in my classes come from underprivileged households. A portion of my students would qualify as undocumented. They have a zest for life and a thirst for learning. They are genuinely excited about technology and its applications in the classroom and life.
Many are first or second generation Americans.
They bridge the divide between their families and their old world and their unrealized potential in a new one.
My Project
Many of my reluctant readers like comics and comic books. Using this “in” with my students, I want to teach The Holocaust using the graphic novels/ comic books Maus/MausII to reach my kids who read the least and need the practice the most.
I am humbly requesting a classroom set of each book, based on a Holocaust survivor’s story, to educate and inspire students who would otherwise not engage with the material and a traditional text.
Please assist me and be there for my kids. This project will put books in the hands of those who need them. The books’ visually engaging format ensures many of my disinterested readers will engage and participate in this unit and its lasting impact on how my learners see and value others.
