Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm known as the trip teacher in my school located in Spanish Harlem. I generally try to find free trips for my students since many of them have enough difficulties given where they live. For example, this previous year, all but 2 of my students qualified for the free breakfast and lunch program at school. Many come from single parent homes where asking for money for a trip can cause problems and heartbreak. I'm looking for sponsorship for my students to visit the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. In 5th grade, there is a Social Studies Standardized Test. The test is in November and it encompasses what the students have learned in 3rd and 4th grades - nothing from 5th grade is on the test. So beginning in September, I review, review, and review. A huge portion of the 4th grade curriculum is about immigration. Going to the Tenement Museum is a perfect way to solidfy their thoughts. The program that we would attend and participate in is called the Confino Program. This living history program focuses on 1916 and the Sephardic-Jewish Confino family. The students are met by a costumed interpreter, playing young Victoria Confino, who welcomes them as if they (the students) are new immigrants who have just arived on the Lower East Side. During the program, the students touch items in the apartment, try on period clothing, and talk to Victoria about her life on the Lower East Side; issues such as family, assimilation, cultural identity, and the role of community are discussed. Many of my students are either first or second generation Americans and can relate to some of the problems Victoria talks about even though it's about 90 years later. Not only will visiting the Tenement Museum enthrall my students, I'm expecting the experience to enhance their abilities to do well on their upcoming S.S. Standardized Test.
