Do you remember what it was like the first time history came alive for you? Hopefully you do! I am trying to make this happen for my 5th graders this coming school year! Through the use of the "Young Americans: Colonial Williamsburg" book series, students will get this chance!
My students attend a public school in California.
They are energetic and curious 10 & 11 year old students who are interested in the world around them. Over half of my students are on free/reduced lunch. They will benefit from the chance to study quality literature while learning about our nation's history.
My Project
The Young Americans Book Series, Colonial Williamsburg Children Tell Their Stories, gives students the chance to walk in the footsteps of children of the colonies. They will get a chance to meet five different children and share in their experiences from 1747-1775.
These books were written in partnership with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. They are authentic novels set in the18th century about actual people, places, and events in this celebrated Virginia town.
Students will get the chance to read these books in literature circle groups. Each group will select one of the colonial children to read about and students will have the opportunities to ask questions and share insights with their group members. Students will complete a multi-media project with their group and present it to the class. Finally, students will have the opportunity to read about the other colonial children.
It is very difficult to find true, quality literature for students that teaches them about history and keeps their interests.
These books do just that! By donating to this project, you will have helped to make history come alive for my students. Thank you in advance!
