Relishing Readers Need Access to Books!

My Students

Don't you love the feeling of finding a "just right" book - one that suits your interests and makes you feel like a strong reader?

My students are working hard to grow as readers, and need books that fit their reading interests and abilities.

They are eager learners and dedicated readers. Their most prized part of our school day is Reader's Workshop, when they have uninterrupted time to read and reflect on their books. Our class is comprised of 18 students from diverse backgrounds and a variety of reading abilities. Many of my students are reading below grade level and need the extra motivation of intriguing, high-interest books that they can read and think deeply about.

My Project

Because I am a new teacher, I lack many important resources in my classroom - most notably a library with a range of books for students to select from. The school district in which I teach recently adopted a new reading curriculum, which relies on students having access to various books at their reading levels. Students are expected to read independently in "just right" books for 30 minutes a day. With a limited supply of books, many of my students (particularly my lower readers) have read through all of the books at their reading level and no longer have new books to read and think about. With a supply of quality books for these students to read, they will be motivated to increase their reading volume and the range of books they read, and will subsequently improve vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills. Most importantly, students will find enjoyment in their reading, since they will have access to books that suit their individual reading tastes.
