Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth-grade teacher that teach at a Title I school in Chicopee, Massachusetts where 100% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch, and our district is about 75% poverty level. Coming to school is oftentimes the best part of our students’ day. Despite their many hardships, our 80 fifth graders come to school everyday with smiling faces and are ready to learn! Throughout the school day, they show us love and appreciation with drawings and lots of hugs. They make our job worthwhile and make us want to continue to inspire their little minds.
My Project
For the last few years, we have struggled greatly to find reliable and comfortable seating for our students while they are in small group instruction.
Here in Chicopee, we use small-group, differentiated instruction for both reading and mathematics, and students travel daily in groups around the classroom to the teacher (myself,) the paraprofessional, the interventionist, and independent time.
I have tried numerous brands of stools, different styles, made of different materials, and nothing has lasted for our students for more than a few months at a time. The stools we have tried always seem promising, but quickly start to wiggle apart and then break altogether. This leaves both teachers and students frustrated and annoyed. More often than not, our students have to drag their bulky desk chairs over to small group, which takes away from important instruction time.
Our students are 10 and 11 years old and the oldest and biggest kids in our school. These almost-sixth graders need comfortable, reliable seating that will hold up throughout the school year, and will allow my students to focus on their work, rather than worry about their broken and wobbly stools. An uncomfortable student is an unproductive student; comfortable students are focused and engaged. By donating to our project, you will not only help to keep our classroom organized, but you will help to create a safer and more productive learning environment for our fifth grade students.
