My Students

Junior English is typically the study of American Literature. Recognizing that students today need to read, write, and think critically means that we need more books our students can "access" and relate to, and which relate to the world today.

Our students come from all ethnicities and family types/backgrounds.

More than half of our students are low-income, which means we cannot ask students to purchase their own novel.

Our goal is to expose our students to multiple perspectives while keeping the literature meaningful and contemporary. The Other Wes Moore is a book that does just that.

My Project

With the requested class set of The Other Wes Moore, my students can delve into the real-world issues of race, class, education, and more. This book is so accessible and relevant to my students today, especially because it's real. Difficult topics are approached thoughtfully, and we can discuss equity among various groups in our country.

I can't wait to add this title to our aging list of books available for my students.

As we discuss American Literature throughout the ages, this book encompasses the issues of our time. After reading immigrant stories and slave narratives, The Other Wes Moore provides a springboard for discussion of the "school to prison pipeline" that so many of our students of color feel but cannot name. This book is timely and necessary.
