Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves 228 students (50% African American, 25% LatinX, 6% Asian, 2% Pacific Islander, 4% White, and 11% mix) with 79% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. We serve students from all over Oakland with the majority of students living in East Oakland.
OAK is a small elementary school located in Oakland, California that is a result of OUSD’s first-ever colocation and redesign with the former charter school, Roses in Concrete Community School and Howard Elementary School.
Both schools worked collaboratively to create a new school that embodies the best of both communities, a school with rigorous instruction grounded in the belief that students should be empowered to bring their unique identities, ancestries, cultures, histories, and experiences into the learning environment.
My Project
I want to build a library in our family resource room where students and their families have access to be able to see themselves in the stories, see what is possible and feel inspired by the leaders, writers, story tellers in the community. Representation of Black authors and stories is needed across all schools, and especially in mine as we serve a high population of African American/Black identifying students. The books that have been chosen will also help students be affirmed in who they are and that they are enough, they are smart and they belong.
