I am a reading specialist at a Title I elementary school in an urban area. I work with 30 to 40 kids each year that are struggling with reading success. All of my kids receive free breakfast and lunch, and many of them have not yet found the spark to ignite their love of reading. That's where I come in! These kids work their tails off to be successful, and sometimes just need some extra support to rise to their full potential and find something they love to read.
My Project
Summer is coming up, but I'm already planning for next year. I want the best for my kids, which involves reflecting on this year. As a reading specialist, I am always on the lookout for the latest and greatest materials, both for independent reading and read alouds. This year, my kids loved the fresh, relevant articles in National Geographic, Jack and Jill and Ranger Rick magazines. They also loved the new releases and award winners of the year, which I used to teach the skills and strategies they needed for success.
I want next year to start as strong as possible!
When something works, I want to stick with it. My kids need to continue receiving these magazines to stay connected to current events and the world around them. They also need the latest and greatest award winners and new releases. These materials can be used in the crucial early days of the school year when establishing a love and excitement for reading is critical.
