I am an 8th grade special education teacher in Brooklyn, NY. I teach a self-contained class (meaing, I teach all subject-areas), but a huge focus of my classroom is literacy. My students struggle with a range of physical, emotional, and learning disabilities, and they perform--currently--from 1 to more than 5 years below grade level. I am working with them to set ambitious individualized academic goals in order to improve their literacy, and every single student needs assistance and development in vocabularly and comprehension skills.
In order to facilitate the wide range of needs in my classroom, I have arranged my class into a series of "centers." During our 90-minute literacy block, learners rotate to various parts of the room to concentrate on different skill sets: word work and vocabulary building, comprehension, phonemic awareness and phonics, and independent reading. I am really excited about implementing "centers" in my classroom as I feel that this is a way that I can meet every single student's needs by differentiating the curriculm to match where he/she currently performs.
In order to make this happen, I need some resources. Working with word families and sorting words into related groups is a great way to build students' awareness of word parts and build vocabularly; therefore, I am requesting some word family sets for our word work station. Practicing comprehension skills during guided reading and independent is important for my "relentless readers", which is why I'm requesting comprehension beach-balls--it's practice in a fun, hands-on way! Finally, word blocks with prefixes and suffixes allow students to build vocabulary skills using a kinesthetic and tactile method.
I am truly appreciate your assistance in helping me create differentiated literacy centers to meet the needs of my students. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, in advance: on behalf of me and my students.
