Releasing Kid Stress Through Creativity & Fidgeting
Help me give my students a break from COVID overload by having enough supplies for both class sessions, giving them something to fidget with, & having items for creativity breaks
This group of 1st graders are very resilient as their entire school career has occurred during COVID. They are in a dual immersion program, so learning a second language and reading while masked is challenging enough, but they also have to wipe down all their shared supplies daily.
Despite all that, in my 28 years of teaching, this is the happiest, most creative group of kids I've ever worked with.
They regularly choose "crafting/creating" as a reward or break, and work together to make incredibly inventive projects out of whatever supplies and scraps we have in the room.
My Project
My wishlist will make a difference to my students because it will provide items such as fidget toys and art supplies to give them much needed social and creative breaks from the stress of being in school during COVID.
Studies show that short breaks to fidget or be creative during work time have real benefits.
Taking a break not only relieves stress, but also helps children develop social, emotional and creative skills. Breaks can reduce stress, anxiety, and frustration. And, they can help kids focus and be more productive. Breaks can also help kids learn to self-regulate and be more aware of when they're getting fed up or losing track of what they're doing.
