Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with identified, gifted, students, in grades 3, 4, and 5, in an Elementary School, in IL. Ours is a Title I district, with a predominantly Hispanic and low-income population. Students in my program are offered higher level curriculum, focusing on critical thinking skills and STEM.
My students are working above grade level and are in need of accelerated curriculum and advanced materials to help build critical thinking skills.
In addition to critical thinking skills, my students need language resources to help them build their academic vocabulary, with an academic focus on Latin and Greek stems.
My Project
Students come into my gifted program from up to 10 different elementary schools. One thing they all have in common is a love of reading. Unfortunately, I lack classroom sets of books, making whole-class reading experiences more challenging. The two texts I have selected, to facilitate students discussion and literacy, are Moo, by Sharon Creech, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, by Kate DiCamillo.
Moo and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane are both excellent examples of literature, which appeals to all readers.
My plan is to introduce students to historical fiction and multiple points of view through Edward Tulane. Students will follow the little rabbit, narrating his life's adventures, in harrowing detail. They will worry with Edward and ultimately rejoice at the culmination of his journey.
When reading Moo, students will be exposed to a poetic style of writing very different from traditional narratives, but just as appealing as the now popular graphic novels. The setting is a rural, farm setting, which is quite alien to many of my students. The dialogue and use of poetic language will expose my students to rich vocabulary.
In short, both of these these books will help advance my students' love of reading, and they're fun to teach. It is a win-win situation.
