My students need 1 Arius YDP-143 88-Key Console Piano in their classroom to have self-contained music instruction and for transition times throughout their day.
I teach a self-contained functional life skills class in a small school corporation in central Indiana. My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including cognitive disabilities, emotional disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. My students learn best from a variety of learning mode, however, tactile and auditory learning are extremely important for them.
Life skills are some of the most important skills that my students need to be learning while at school.
My school does a very nice job providing as many resources as they can budget, however, it is difficult for them to provide everything that I really would like to have for my students.
My Project
As a teacher of students in a self-contained, life-skills classroom, I want to expose the kids to as many life experiences as possible. It is difficult for my students to participate in many of the elective general education classes, including the music program in our school. Also, classical music has a very calming effect for my students (anyone, for that matter). I plan to use the keyboard for meditation and transition times throughout the day. Having a life-time of experience with music, and more specifically, piano performance, I would like to have access to some musical instruments in my classroom. Music therapy has always really interested me, as I have seen, first hand, the effect that music has on my kiddos. A piano would be an integral part of that collection, and would allow me to lead a functional music class during my day.
