My Students

I am a first year teacher for the Joplin School district and am facing a tremendous challenge. The school that I will be teaching at has been severely damaged by the tornado this past May. The resources I have will be very limited.

My students were already from low socioeconomic status.

Now with the tornado, the families of my students are even more economically depressed. Many of the student's parents have lost their jobs and all of their possessions. School is a safe haven for most of the students who attend our school in Southwestern Missouri.

My Project

I have requested a large carpet for my classroom and a beanbag chair. These two items will be used in our daily activities. In my classroom I will be doing several whole group activities with the Smart Board, where I will allow the students to get out of their seats and come to the carpet. The bean bag chair will be used in my reading corner to provide a relaxing an enjoyable environment for the students to read.
