Help me give my students new chairs for our media center; our previous chairs had torn upholstery and the price to reupholster was more than the price of buying new chairs.

My Students

My school serves approximately 260 Pre-Kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The students are respectful, energetic young people who are more than happy to be back at school. They enter our doors each morning excited and ready to learn!

The school qualifies for the community eligibility provision; therefore, all students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My school also serves a diverse population of students. Currently enrolled are five American Indian males and three American Indian females, one Asian male and two Asian females, and nine Hispanic males and seven Hispanic females. There are also 78 African American males and 80 African American females, 35 Caucasian males and 29 Caucasian females, and two multi-racial males and two multi-racial females.

My Project

These materials will make a significant impact on my students' learning. We want to create a space where students want to come to read. One way to do that is to make the space attractive and inviting. We have new carpet and fresh paint, but the student's seating is beyond repair.

The current chairs are in great disrepair as many have torn fabric/cushions and have been mended with tape.

The upholstered fabric is worn, and after visiting an upholstery shop, I learned that it would cost more to repair the chairs than to purchase new ones; however, with limited resources, the funds are unavailable.

Something as simple as a chair will make a difference in my students' learning because it will help to create an area that is welcoming and where students will want to visit to become better readers.
