My Students
I work in a classroom of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who receive social emotional support and services. My students can have a shorter tolerance for everyday occurrences and may react or act in extreme ways. They are taught grade level curriculum while learning ways to regulate their emotions and behaviors. They learn how to identify their feelings and how to use coping strategies to deal with extreme emotions.
I teach them calming strategies and offer sensory options to help with regulation such as creative seating (exercise ball) , blankets( weighted/ non weighted), and a mini trampoline.
To meet the needs of my growing classroom I need to provide more options for the diverse needs of my students.
My Project
The students in my class need to be emotionally regulated (calm) to be available for learning. Due to the nature of their disability; emotional regulation can be difficult to maintain.
It has become vital to create a space in the classroom where students can regulate themselves.
This space needs to be a temporary escape from their current struggles. A place to regain composure and a sense of self.
The items selected like the weighted blanket, kinetic sand, and water beads can help students feel safe and calm. These are items that the students enjoy using and can be easily maintained over multiple school years.
