My students need MP3 players, loaded with audio books so that they can hear stories they may not yet be able to read on their own.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How cool would it be to be seen as a 2nd grader with an MP3 player, while you are listening to an Anansi Tale? My students LOVE to read. We want to send them home with MP3 players loaded with stories to entertain them and keep their love for reading alive.
My students speak Wolof, Thai, Mandarin, Spanish, Vietnamese, and are learning English.
Unfortunately some of their parents are not able to read to them at night because they too are learning English, and may not have access to books in their own language. Also, many students are being raised by siblings -- as their parents work 2 or 3 jobs.
Our students are extremely motivated to learn, but they need more exposure to English, and time to sit and enjoy story time in the comfort of their own homes. Although they get to hear great stories at school, we want them to be able to share their love for reading with their families at home. Whether it is their parents, siblings, or just on their own, I know my students would be extremely grateful for the opportunity to listen to a story on an MP3 player.
My Project
I will send these materials home with a different student each night so that the learning doesn't stop when the school bell rings. I will make kits containing 1 book a student can read independently, and 2 books that have stories loaded into an MP3 player.
This project will make a difference in the lives of these students by extending their learning and exposure to their families.
Not to mention with all of the testing anxiety nowadays, it will be a great release for students to be able to sit at home, relax, and unwind to some great literature (instead of TVs or video games).
