I teach at a Title 1 school in the fifth largest district in Illinois. This means a large percentage of students who attend my school come from low income families. This is my first year teaching the third grade Honors class. These students qualified for an accelerated program because they are the top 10% of their peers of the entire school district. I have a smaller class this year that is full of dreamers, thinkers, engineers and innovators, but perhaps most importantly, these students LOVE to read!
This group of kids makes coming to work every day fun and exciting-I do it with a smile.
These students are extremely kind, thoughtful, passionate, inquisitive and slightly competitive. They challenge each other (and me) daily. We have amazing conversations in an environment that we built together, where everyone feels safe and respected. They are our future and I want to give them a great start to their long successful career.
My Project
I have the perfect little nook in my classroom that I would like to transform into a reading space for my students. We practice The Daily 5 Literacy program, and one thing students do every day is "read to self."
I would like to have a relaxing and inviting space with a colorful rug and comfortable chairs for students to enjoy the books in my classroom library!
During the "read to someone" time of the day, students would love to pull up a colorful stool to the table to read with me, instead of sitting in the same chair that they use all day long.
These updates to my classroom will make the learning environment for my students more enjoyable and will promote reading every day!
