In the first month of school, I have heard students exclaim, "Math finally makes sense!" and "I had no idea Math could be THIS fun!" I have the incredible privilege of teaching Math to seventy-five 5th grade students, who come from widely diverse backgrounds.
I teach at a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Therefore, it is crucial that the math instruction and the classroom environment I provide is the highlight of my students day.
My Project
This is why our classroom needs more math tools, manipulatives and games to be incorporated in our daily math curriculum and center rotations. In 5th grade, we learn about incredibly complex topics such as decimals, exponents, fractions, geometry, and long division. While our math curriculum allows students to develop a deeper understanding of math, it does not provide enough ways for students to work on math in a hands-on way.
We are requesting Math folder games, geometry kits, discovery jars, and center manipulatives that will allow students to better understand these difficult 5th grade math concepts, and will help our more visual learners understand math.
Furthermore, these tools will help students be more engaged and focused in math, and of course have more fun, which will create a more successful and welcoming classroom.
