My students are part of a new Extended Day Kindergarten program that is being launched in the district to provide additional instruction time, more hands-on activities, and alternative teaching methods to the students showing the greatest academic need.
These eager learners are just starting their school adventures and require a lot of additional support to be successful learners.
Even though many of them have difficulty focusing or paying attention for very long, they have shown great interest in listening to books and at this point in the year they are eagerly trying to apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to figure out simple words in books.
Even though my students cannot read many things independently at this time, I want them to get a feel for being able to look at and enjoy books and have the opportunity to read the words they can. As the year has progressed, I have seen their love of literacy grow and their self-confidence blossom as they become readers to be reckoned with!
My Project
My kindergarten students are just beginning to unlock the magic of the written word, and I want them to view reading as a pleasurable activity that becomes a preferred choice. The alphabet rug will serve as a reminder of the building blocks needed to have a good foundation in the English language and will also be the center point our reading area is built around.
Nothing is more relaxing than unwinding and losing yourself in a good story.
Although these beginning reader books have rather simple plots and characters, they can provide a great foundation for my students to build confidence as they learn to sound out simple words and identify common words by sight. The pictures are often engaging and provide support for words the students may struggle to sound out.
