My fourth grade students live in a rural area where 100% of the children in our school receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Although, many of my students have difficult challenges at home, they come to school every morning smiling and ready to learn about our world and it's technological advancements!
When you ask yourself, "What will they think of next?" I can't answer that question, but I most definitely know who "they" will be!
It's the fourth graders who walk into our room every morning. This group of young innovators are continuously looking to explore, design, and use their creative minds to think up the unimaginable.
Despite the personal hardships of many of my students, these children continue to strive for greatness and prove their outstanding ability. In fact, our school has been so positive in finding every student's greatness, we were named the first "Lighthouse" school within the Leader In Me program in our area.
My Project
Engaging my students in reading is essential to their academic success. Not only do I want them to read to increase their vocabulary and intellect, but I also want them to fall in love with reading. One way I can do that is provide them with a classroom library filled with a variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts, but unless my students have a desire to visit our library those books will sit collecting dust.
By offering a classroom library to my students with a feeling of warmth and comfort of a carpet and Flex-Space comfy chairs those books will move from the shelf into the hands of my fourth graders.
I can visualize my students working collaboratively together in this special area holding authentic conversations about books they are presently reading or topics we are discussing in class. This welcoming area will also be designated for students to become authors themselves, by developing stories of their own.
