I teach 18 kindergarten students with various intellectual, emotional, and social abilities. Our school is located on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation, in rural Northern Minnesota. Around 92% of my students are enrolled members of the reservation, and are Anishinaabe (First People).
I am in my fourth year teaching Kindergarten, and I absolutely love it.
Prior to the classroom I taught small reading groups in the Title I program. I am astounded daily by the growth my students make, and by their enthusiasm for learning. However, because I am relatively new, I need many items for my classroom.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of toys including blocks, magnetic wild animals, and snap bots as well as some storage to organize these "treasures". These toys will enhance my students learning during their scheduled free play time. The benefits of free play include building creativity with unique ideas, development of motor planning skills, fostering of decision making skills, fostering of independence, development of social and collaborative play skills, and provides opportunities for them to discover their interests. There are many studies that confirm the above list, plus include countless other skills.
I currently have a few toys, but require more to replenish and switch out.
The toys I have chosen encourage both independent and group play. By increasing my free play items in the classroom, there will be enough items for each student to choose independent play if they would like.
Thank you for taking the time to review my project and for your possible support.
