Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I have the privilege of teaching both 7th & 8th grade students. Nearly all of my students are from low-income households, and have struggles beyond the classroom everyday. These kids are so smart, and deserved to be challenged in the classroom. Having class sets of books will allow for these students to read texts that are on grade level, are challenging and rigorous, and help them achieve greatness.
Reading challenging, but crucial, texts like what I am requesting will also allow them to see the world from a perspective different from their own.
My 8th Grade ELA Lab students will be following their ReadingPlus curriculum, to try to raise their reading and writing levels back up to grade level. I will be pairing grade level texts with that curriculum for a richer experience. This year my students will have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Divergent, and The Hunger Games together. We are now planning on reading The Outsiders together to facilitate important conversations in a relatable text.
My Project
One of the greatest criticisms of the ELA education students receive in this country is that they do not have access to grade level texts.
To combat this, I'd like to have several class sets of novels that are on grade level that we can work through together this year and in years to come.I am excited to read these texts with my students because they have rich language, will challenge them, and will introduce them to a new perspective.
My 7th grade core ELA classes will love having meaningful conversation, learning from one another, and diving deeper into texts that challenge them and that they can relate to.
