Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Buenos dias!" said with a smile is how my students and I greet each other in the mornings. The model in our classroom is that every day is a new day, and we always give each other a chance to start again in a positive way.
I work at a Title I dual immersion school in Paso Robles where many of our students come from low income households.
I teach 3rd grade with a class of 30 students. There are many subjects that pose a struggle for many of the students. I am always looking for different types of hands-on materials or activities that may help enhance their confidence and knowledge in learning.
My Project
My students need a class set of Rekenrek math manipulatives to help them understand numbers in a creative, visual and conceptual way, so they can develop powerful understandings of numbers and prepare for STEM careers. I want to buy a classroom set of 30 Rekenreks, an activity center for an independent group to work with rekenreks and a class set of lap white boards.
My class has a variety of needs and I want to provide them with all the options I can to make their 3rd grade year the best it can be!
I am teaching a third-grade class of 30 students.
They are eager to learn and try new things, but they have many odds stacked against them. Our school is located in a rural farming area. My students come from a low socioeconomic background and many have parents who work in migrant field work. The struggles facing my students are challenging, many of them struggle with number sense and fluency and are working below 3rd grade level. However, we have created a school culture that is nurturing while setting high expectations.
We have a lot of work to do, but we can do it!! By offering my students a 1-to-1 Rekenrek to meet their individual needs, I believe they will be successful in academics and in future STEM careers.
