Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyone can be a reader, no matter what road they have gone down!

My students are in 7th grade at a New York City public school.

The school is a K-8 school, which means my students are the biggest and often feel as if they have outgrown their surroundings and even their resources. Our school is in Harlem and is almost 100% free lunch which means we are a high poverty school. My students are active readers who are just trying to navigate the changes going on in their lives

My Project

These books will be used in a specific after school program which targets reluctant readers. Students will use these resources to begin to associate reading with relaxation and self-esteem rather than associating reading with failure. Many of these students will be in book clubs with others, discussing and enjoying these books together. My students have filled out interest surveys and have chosen genres such as vampire fantasy, sports and teen issues therefore I have asked for books like "Hush Hush", "Bitten" "The story of Lebron James" and other high interest low level books that will help my students realize reading does not have to be boring!

This project is important because at this point in my students' lives, reading has gone down on the "cool" spectrum.

I want them to know that just because their social and physical lives are changing, it doesn't mean that their education or imagination has to suffer!
