I teach in a low-income (Title 1) school. 80% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The school has approximately 600 students total. My students love to create and discover different types of art media and learn about artists. Many of my students use art as a safe outlet for their feelings and emotions. Art can be a healing force and contributes to their psychological well-being.
My students find that with art they can express themselves, relieve stress, and learn to think outside the box.
This kind of thinking is essential for academic achievement, and preparation, for the workforce. Art reinforces many skills desired for the 21st-century workforce: Problem-solving, adaptability and working well with others. Please help me give this advantage to my students. I want them to be college and career ready!
My Project
The materials listed will help to rejuvenate, replenish and restock our classroom. Teaching approximately 300 students in the Visual Arts, unfortunately, costs money. I teach students in all grades from K-8 and I want to provide them with a well-rounded art experience. This includes but isn't limited to, drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking and mix-media projects. Painting is a safe starting place for many students, crafting using cutting and pasting with Elmer's glue is key for fine motor skills and glass etching can be utilized by the older more advanced students.
Several of our students have won cash prizes for their art, been published in art anthologies and won local contests.
Without the needed supplies I won't be able to continue giving these opportunities to my students. Our classroom runs off of donations and any leftover supplies we might currently have (two class sets of oil pastels and chalk pastels, some crafting materials, nearly used up color pencils and markers.) Only with your continued support will our successes continue!
