I teach some of the most amazing kiddos in Hopkins County. I am truly inspired by the level of devotion that my students exhibit each and every day they come to school. I stand in awe of the way that, against all odds, they continue to give their very best. As students of such a technological generation, I see that they are affluent in all things digital; they have digital skills that will serve them well in the workforce. However, what I notice is they are not coming with a strong foundation in or a love for Reading.
As a Reading teacher, I am competing with so many digital forms of information and, unfortunately, each year, I see the love of reading dwindling down.
When polled about reading, the main complaint that students seem to voice is they don't have enough "fun stuff" to read or enough choice in what they are reading.
My Project
As a student in the 21st century, there are so many things that are competing for the attention of children. As a teacher, it makes me so sad because I am seeing more and more students come to me with the ability to read, but no heart or desire to want to read. I can remember as a child, sitting for hours and just reading. I want to reinspire and reignite a love of reading with my students. One way to spark the flame is through providing literature that is relevant and current to students along with be applicable to their lives. Storyworks Magazines are wonderful resources that are both relateable and educational. Through the use of these magazines, it is my hope that I will be able to foster a love of life-long readers.
