Reinforcing Toys for Preschool Autism Discrete Trial Learning
My students need engaging and highly reinforcing toys to help them meet their academic, social, communication, and adaptive goals through discrete trial learning.
Our classroom serves preschoolers with autism from four schools in central Seattle. They attend sessions in our classroom for additional services and interventions to target social skills, adaptive/life skills, and academic skills. An area of focus is self-regulation in response to their unique sensory needs.
Our students love movement, dancing, music, exploring their environments, and learning new things.
They are learning to communicate their needs, work within a class community, and develop independence in their social, life and academic skills.
My Project
As we teach students with autism, we use research based approaches such as discrete trial learning. Through associating a correct response with a reinforcing and highly motivating item, we shape students' behavior, thus reaching our academic, social, communication, and adaptive goals. Student engagement in discrete trial learning hinges not only on positive relationships with their teachers but also on their motivation in receiving a preferred toy when they correctly respond. We need new and exciting toys to keep our students motivated to learn and grow. The toys in this project were chosen based on the specific interests of our current students. They love toys that light up, make sounds, and inspire their creativity.
