My students need 15 different materials including: recreational equipment including 2 footballs, 1 basketball, and 3 jump ropes, personal hygiene products including 3 bottles of lotion, 5 copies of high interest books by the authors Walter D. Meyers and Paul Langan, 3 games of mancala and 3 games of chess, 1 pack of rewritable CDs, and 3 iPod shuffles.

Seventh grade Communication Arts students need to know real world applications of English, such as how to read a book or write an essay! My students learn in a diverse middle school located in inner-city Missouri where one-third of our students speak English as a second language, one-third of our students receive special education services (in an inclusion setting), and 98% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. We are a school that faces the many adversities of poverty and the problems of a large urban school district; however, our school is starting to take great strides in attempting to do our part in closing the achievement gap. A learning environment is created when students feel invested in their learning, and investment cannot occur until students understand that behavioral and self-control issues reduce the amount of English we learn. My goal with this proposal is to extrinsically motivate my students in hopes that this extrinsic motivation will ultimately lead to the intrinsic motivation that is so desperately needed. By providing them with a positive rewards system, I hope to encourage students to exhibit appropriate behavior while engaging in the educational environment. The items in the proposal are listed in the hopes that by creating a positive incentive program, I'll be given the opportunity to teach students intrinsic motivation in their education. All of the items (including high-interest novels, outdoor/recreation equipment, chess sets, writable cds, iPod shuffles and electronics) are supposed to help my students want to exhibit all the attributes of a well-behaved, determined student. Students will receive a deposit in their "bank account" every two weeks and will be able to fill out a proposal every month for a specific prize. Those students who gain the most "7th Grade Bucks" and write the most compelling proposal will be able to "buy" one of the items YOU provide us with. Too many times we focus all of our efforts on those students who act out in class and do not meet expectations set forth by the teacher. Students who exemplify excellent behavior are often ignored and do not get the recognition they so rightly deserve. By creating this positive rewards system, I hope to reward those students who are well-behaved and encourage those who are poorly-behaved to change for the better. This system will shape students understanding of why school-appropriate behaviors are essential to learning the most they possibly can. YOU are the solution to helping me improve my classroom management. Without a great classroom management system, the amount of learning that takes place in the classroom is greatly reduced. Not only am I teaching my students English objectives, I also need to teach them socially appropriate behavior in a school setting (self-control, responsibility, respect). The lack of resources that my school has in a low-income district does not allow me to provide my students with the same strategies that other schools are able to utilize. By you donating money to this proposal, you are allowing me to ensure that all my students want to master English objectives, and that they are invested in doing so. Your help is absolutely essential in allowing me to give my students the education they deserve.
