Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a 2nd-5th grade Alternative Curriculum Education (Special Ed) at NMSD. Many of my students have additional diagnoses (since they all have a hearing loss). I have four students that are in elementary school that have Autism Spectrum disorder.
My students benefit from a lot of structure in their environment with frequent opportunities to access reinforcement so that they stay motivated to participate in classroom instruction.
We use a variety of supports for our students such as using Alternative and Adaptive Communication, visual and interactive schedules, modifying our language, and using a variety of manipulatives and tools during classroom instruction.
They all have such fun unique personalities. Generally speaking, the girls love to play with horses and stickers and the boys love to play with dragons, slime, dinosaurs, and Legos. Watching them grow throughout the year is the most rewarding part of my job. Every year I say it, but it is true every year- I have the best students in the school!
My Project
These materials are for kids who like visual stimuli in order to help encourage them to do their work, which is required in order to get these items. This helps to ensure their safety (they can play with these items instead of banging on their head or putting their own fists in their eye sockets) and helps us (their teachers) to do our jobs more effectively.
The use of reinforcers both increases academic work completion and decreases time spent in tantrums for many kids, but especially for kids who have Autism.
This is important since they are starting out with delays, and we are trying to mediate those delays so they can succeed in their academic careers.
