My Students

My students are ninth grade English Language Learners who work incredibly hard to develop their English proficiency skills in speaking, reading, and writing all while learning the same challenging English Literature curriculum as their native English speaking peers.

I admire their tenacity as they learn to navigate the social and academic landscape of high school.

They are so bright and capable of achieving great success over the next four years. And they motivate me to be the best version of myself each and every day.

My Project

It's important for my ENL students to access the same content as their native English Speaking peers and so having the graphic novel version of Shakespeare's classic, Romeo and Juliet, will allow them to visualize what they read. A movie may be helpful for visualization as well but my students also need to practice reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and fluency through the process of reading. Research shows graphic novels in an ENL classroom contribute to a better understanding of content. And I also want my students to enjoy this classic and not feel deterred by the confusing nature of the Shakespearean language.I know that they will love this beautifully illustrated and racially diverse adaptation.
