Ms. Thomas from Tucson AZ is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Reid Park Zoo Trip

My students need to get to the zoo, so we need to raise enough to pay for a bus to take us.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are located at a middle school in South Tucson. We have a total of almost 1,000 students. The majority of students (90%) are ethnic minorities and is part of a school district that is currently under a federal desegregation order. The students are primarily from low-income households.

I personally have about 150 students in my science classes, with an average of 30 students per period in 5 periods.

As Quarter 1 report cards came out, I was beyond frustrated and disappointed with the average grade in my class. Most of these grades were not due to a lack of understanding of the material but more to behavioral issues and not turning in assignments. For the students' sake (and for my own sanity), I need to turn this ship around. I want to work hard to get students and families more engaged.

My Project

We are in our Diversity of Life unit. At the zoo, they will be able to observe lots of plant and animal life as well as classifying living and non-living specimens. They will hopefully also get the opportunity to actually interact with them by feeding the giraffes.

I was surprised to find out how many of the students have never been to our local zoo!

This will be a day to remember! The requirements to attend this trip will be an A or B in the class as their 3rd quarter grade as well as at least a B average in their weekly Behavior and Participation grades. Because I have classroom policies of "No Opting Out" and "Do Your Work, Do Your Best, or Do it Again," every student has the capability and opportunity to reach these goals.
