Regulating Our Emotions Through Journals, Meetings, and Breathing

My Students

Our room is full of high energy, laughter, and inquisitive voices. On any given day, you will find my students scattered throughout the room working and learning together. You will see passionate faces and hand motions as they explain their thinking. You will hear a lot of noise and enthusiasm. At first glance, it may seem chaotic, but if you watch for just a moment longer you will feel the learning surging throughout the room.

My students come to school each day with a thirst for knowledge and an eagerness to improve their lives and the world around them.

Opportunities to see new places and have intellectual experiences don't happen often for some of them. We are part of a large urban district full of diversity. Many of my students are living in poverty with a multitude of problems at home. School truly is the great equalizer for them and their only chance for success.

My Project

Imagine entering a classroom each day knowing that you are heard, you are valued, and you are important. That is the culture I have set out to create for my students.

Students who feel connected and emotionally regulated are prepared to learn and problem solve.

Classroom rituals bring all students together, build community, and create predictability. These are critical foundations for students who do not have a sense of belonging and structure outside of the classroom. The items in this project will allow me to more effectively build relationships with my students and bring structure to my students.

The journals will be used as emotional reflection journals, that students will have access to write in throughout the day and share with me if and when they choose. With the beads, each student will create a beaded fidget talisman to hold during morning meetings. This will allow students to focus on the speaker while making them feeling connected to the classroom circle. The expandable balls and hidden treasure game will be used in our amygdala reset station to help students calm down and regulate their emotions.
