Help me give my students tools such as light filters, a ball stool, fidgets, body rollers and footrests to manage their sensory needs so they can focus on learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are curious, imaginative and active children with autism and emotional difficulties. They live in low income areas with little access to support for their needs.
Our classroom focus is on making all our students as independent as they can be, while learning new things every day.
Regulating our emotions and understanding how our actions make other people feel is a struggle for my students. Each day we try to improve skills and help our students function in a social world that is difficult for them to understand.
My Project
My students need tools to help regulate their sensory systems. Things like foot rests, fidgets, body sox, ball chairs and body rollers help give them a way to move and begin to regulate their sensory systems.
Self-regulation enables a child to move away from depending on others and become more independent.
Independence in school and home is a goal for all of my students. As children begin to self-regulate, skills such as concentration, comprehension, reasoning and learning new information improve.
Getting these tools will help ensure that my students are well equipped to cope in learning environments and reach their full potential.
