Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, resilient, and love learning! They thrive with hands-on activities and when there is an opportunity to show their unique gifts and talents. Our school is located in Oklahoma City and is over 90% free and reduced lunch. Our school has an amazing community that wants students to succeed, but sometimes resources can be scarce. My students come to school excited and curious to learn, and they learn best when they are in a flexible and comfortable environment where every learning style is met. They are always eager to try new things and love being provided with chances to learn outside of the box.
My Project
This year we are beginning a Reggio Emilia approach to learning, which is “an innovative and inspiring approach to early childhood education which values the child as strong, capable and resilient; rich with wonder and knowledge. Every child brings with them deep curiosity and potential and this innate curiosity drives their interest to understand their world and their place within it. It is the belief that children use many different ways to show their understanding and express their thoughts and creativity.” This new approach will offer exciting and engaging learning opportunities for every child. They will be exposed to new ways of thinking and be able to put their creativity on display. It excites me to think about the depth of learning that will unfold in my classroom of first graders. To create the best environment for a Reggio Emilia approach, my classroom will need to be filled with natural light, a lot less clutter, and more neutral colored items that have a deeper purpose. My first graders will thrive in the opportunity to use hands on materials and learn through purposeful play.
