Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics to amazing motivated language learners in a safe learning environment. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school, college, and future careers. The students in our school are about 70% ELL and speak about 20 different languages.
The students in my New American classroom are English language learners who have been in the country for less than one year.
Not all students who are non-English speakers are selected for this setting. My students are refugees from several different countries. They had limited or very interrupted schooling in their own countries due to lack of resources and upheaval. This year, I have students from Congo, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, El Salvador, and Rwanda. There are many different languages in my classroom and several different cultures. For these students, life in our city is very different from their lives before coming here. We strive to be at all times respectful and appreciative of each others' culture and strengths. We believe that we all have gifts to share and that with education we will have the power to do so.
My Project
Imagine coming to school each day and having to see it in the exact condition that you left it the day before. This is great when you leave it clean. My students take wonderful care of our classroom - emptying the trash and picking up carefully before they leave... but we lack cleaning supplies. My students already are "cleaners." This has been wonderful because we have a small classroom filled to the brim with learners. We are always last on the list for custodial help. We make do. If we were not self-sufficient in looking after our space, it would quickly get away from us. We pick up our floor each day, but are unable to vacuum or sweep because we do not have the proper supplies.
Having a clean space to work seems like a little thing but it makes a big difference when so many people are working together - we know it is important to work together to establish a classroom community where everyone takes responsibility for the entire learning environment.
We ask for brooms and dustpans so that we can keep our floor clean. We also ask for Clorox wipes so that we can clean our desks and chairs. We do this once a week. The students are good at keeping their hands clean and covering their mouths when they sneeze or cough, but germs still spread. By cleaning our space, we can minimize the colds and other infections that we share. Finally, we ask for Kleenex and paper towels. Kleenex help with the never-ending runny and stuffy noses. Paper towels help with little (sometimes bigger) spills. The students can learn about good cleaning and hygiene practices as well as take pride in their classroom learning space.
