Refugees Need Chromebooks to Narrow the Digital Divide During COVID-19
Help me give my students two chromebooks for AT HOME learning during the COVID-19 digital learning experience. These Chromebooks will be utilized by two families (4 students).
Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics to amazing, motivated language learners in a safe learning environment. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school, college, and future careers. The students in our school are about 70% ELL and speak about 20 different languages.
The students in my New American classroom are English language learners who have been in the country for less than one year.
Not all students who are non-English speakers are selected for this setting. My students are refugees from several different countries. They have had limited or interrupted schooling in their own countries due to lack of resources and upheaval. This year, I have students from Congo, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, Guatemala, and Honduras. There are many different languages in my classroom and several different cultures. For these students, life in our city is very different from their lives before coming here. We strive to be at all times respectful and appreciative of each other's culture and strengths. We believe that we all have gifts to share, and that, with education, we will have the power to do so.
My Project
Whittier is currently one of three elementary schools in Kansas City Public Schools with a targeted New Americans program, serving English Language Learners (ELLs) who never had the opportunity to go to school before coming to the United States.
COVID-19 has stolen that learning opportunity away.
We want to improve our ability to meet our students through digital instruction. However, students don't have computers at home. Through donations from you, we can purchase these two chromebooks to be shared by families (one chromebook for two students). This technology will allow students to access appropriate instruction for our very unique population. We will be able to tailor our instruction to each student's needs. They will not miss out on instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For students who come from refugee situations, the development of strong language skills is critical. Even now, we are providing digital instruction. Unfortunately, our learners cannot access it without your support. With your help, we can close the digital divide for our learners. Help us make this a reality for our students!
