The students in my Humanities II class all qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch. They are immigrants, refugees, and English Language Learners. They grew up in Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, and many other places around the world.
As immigrants and refugees, they need access to laptop computers, in order to create more equity and navigate the quickly growing industries and society of the United States.
My students don't often get help from our school district and they need it! Please consider helping these students from South Minneapolis!
My Project
This year, we will be reading many culturally relevant books. The students use laptops in order to research authors and subjects. They write essays based on the research. We, as teachers, are attempting to teach them 21st century skills. I can't tell you how many times we had to have the students write out essays on paper. They need to start typing now, in order to prepare for their future. The internet is an invaluable resource, and if they aren't learning how to research and look up credible information for their projects, they won't be able to compete for jobs in the future.
The internet offers a multitude of online language learning possibilities for these immigrants and refugees.
