This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve immigrant and refugee children from 21 different countries. There are 5 languages represented in my room - Vietnamese, Bantu, Arabic, English and Somali. Our school is 98% free and reduced lunch.
The students and families I serve are overwhelmed with gratitude at the educational opportunity their children are receiving.
Despite previously trumatic experiences my students come to school excited and ready to engage with the rigorous academic curriculum.
The high value placed on education by our families provides the motivation and support necessary to help students who are years behind grade level expectations.
My Project
15/17 of my students report that they do not have books at home to read. Their reading experiences are limited to books available at school and only for a portion of the day. Over 50% of students in my class are reading below grade level in 2nd. Research shows that beyond 3rd grade, students who are behind in reading will never catch up to their proficient counter-parts.
The best way to build reading skills is to get quality literature in the hands of students.
The books you donate will cover a variety of interesting topics topics and will encourage reluctant readers to practice reading every day.
