This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
More than two-thirds of our students come from low-income households, live in some of Boston's poorest neighborhoods and come from single-parent homes. However, our students are not defined by their challenges.
Our students are resilient, motivated, curious and impassioned.
Though they are in the seventh grade, the typical student in my class reads at least two years below level. There is a significant word and knowledge gap between my students and their counterparts in wealthier districts. One of the reasons my students continue to show more interest in reading over the course year is because they have access to a robust classroom library. In addition to targeted and relevant instruction, our students continue to close that persistent, achievement gap because they share a passion for reading, thus opening their worlds to more experiences and ideas.
My Project
Our grade level recently received a visit from Jason Reynolds, the acclaimed and widely read YA author. His journey as a student and his success as a writer has re-energized my students' passion for independent reading.
My students have rediscovered a passion for reading and it's propelling their growth as readers and writers-help us sustain that!
Having access to recent publications that are appealing to their age-group, interest levels, and their reading levels will help sustain their eagerness to read, talk, and write about books!
We dedicate a lot of time in analyzing the craft of published writers. My students hone their own writing skills by mimic the moves that their favorite authors employ. Already this year, students have pulled "beautiful" sentences from the literature they read during independent reading that they admire and want to emulate!
Thank you for infusing new life into our classroom library!
