Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been a high school teacher for the last eighteen years in a low-income urban community servicing African American and Hispanic students. I work with remarkable students who have jobs, take care of their siblings and sick family members, volunteer in the community, and still maintain high grades because they seek post-secondary opportunities for themselves. Working closely with our diverse learner population over the last year, I have noticed that they have minimal resources to support their many needs.
Although these diverse learners are exposed to a rigorous curriculum and are placed in their least restrictive environments, they needs additional resources to support their behavioral, emotional, and social needs; in addition to, their reading, writing, communicating, scientific, and mathematical skills.
My Project
As the case manager and special education teacher of our diverse learners, I have been diligently working on creating a safe and supportive space for our special needs students to decompress during the day when they grow frustrated, need time to reflect, or someone to talk to. In addition to the obstacles they face accessing curriculum, many of my students struggle to get to school on time because they are responsible for taking their younger siblings to school and often miss breakfast. Being hungry is just another obstacle they have to deal with when they should just focus on school. Therefore, I am working on strengthening our resource room to eliminate this obstacle and provide these students with water, snacks, and access to heat up food throughout the day.
The resources provided will help my students recharge and refocus their energy on completing the daily tasks at school and help deter further frustration they may experience.
As an educator who believes in this project, I will continue to help students by providing additional snacks and subscribe to a water delivery service so they have access to water all year long.
