Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a city where crime rates are high, and there is a 98% poverty rate. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with the same creative and meaningful learning experiences that other students are able to have.
Although I may not be able to control their home lives, I can certainly control their experiences during the school day.
By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My students, although only three and four years old, are hard workers, and they deserve to come to school and feel safe and loved, and I'm happy to be the one who is able to give them that.
My Project
My 3 and 4 year old students come from very low income homes so many are not exposed to any of these materials outside of our classroom. My students vary with different types of disabilities so allowing them to be hands on and interactive with these types of materials will only help to enhance their skills even more. These materials would try assist with their everyday learning as well as learning about how to develop outside of their comfort zones.
My students would benefit from float and find alphabet bubbles, building and STEAM kits and many more items because they crave that sensory input.
Many of my students struggle with language and require hands on materials to learn. These materials will assist them in that. In my district our curriculum is very structured and we follow guidelines that we must adhere to in order to reach specific goals and objectives for our students. My classroom is broken up into centers and one of the most important aspects of our program is how they become creative on their own and create their own ideas and materials. This model taps into many areas of their minds to be able to create situations, apply thinking to what they are doing and ultimately problem solving.
My students would also benefit from social skills book and figures are many of my students are still learning socialization skills and how to be a friend.
I believe as a teacher it is our duty to provide whatever we can to assist in their learning especially at this young early age of preschool.
