Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My busy buddies are ready to read! I have a classroom full of the most delightful and energetic young people I have had the pleasure to work with. My first graders are so excited to learn and develop as young readers. We are an extremely diverse group of kids in one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S. As dissimilar as my students may be from one another they come together to learn each day as a part of a cooperative group.
My Project
Our well loved books need a refresh. The books I am asking for are sets of leveled readers following the lives of four characters. Each book set gets progressively more difficult beginning with Kindergarten level books all the way up to second grade level books. I have been using these leveled readers for almost ten years to teach small groups of kids to read. Unfortunately with all of those warm and ready hands some of the books have experienced a bit of wear and tear. This project will help us to refresh the books that have been loved by so many and include some new books to add to our collection.
One of the things I love about these books is that the characters reflect our diverse classroom.
My students get to know characters with whom they share so many life experiences. Some of the characters speak two languages at home, another character has parents who are divorced. It means a lot to readers to get to see their lives reflected in the stories they read. The children get to develop literacy skills while they see what happens when Derek finds a sick bird or enjoy the experience of new shoes along side Kendra. I have seen children catch fire with the love of reading as they cruise through these amazing books. With some updated copies and second grade level books I can't wait to see how far these children can go!
